Dental Transformation Initiative

Within the Medi-Cal 2020 Waiver, the Dental Transformation Initiative (DTI) represents a critical mechanism to improve dental health for Medi-Cal children by focusing on high-value care, improved access, and utilization of performance measures to drive delivery system reform. More specifically, this strategy aims to increase the use of preventive dental services for children, prevent and treat more early childhood caries, and increase continuity of care for children. Given the importance of oral health to the overall health of an individual, California views improvements in dental care as critical to achieving overall better health outcomes for Medi-Cal beneficiaries, particularly children.
Due to COVID-19 impacts and the delay of the California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal
(CalAIM) initiatives, DHCS submitted a request to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for federal approval to extend the Medi-Cal 2020 Waiver for 12 months ending on December 31, 2021. On December 29, 2020,
CMS approved DHCS'
request for an extension of the Medi-Cal 2020 Waiver, which included DTI Domains 1, 2, and 3.
DHCS has created an e-mail service for interested stakeholders such as advocates, consumers, counties, legislative staff, providers, and state associations to register to receive relevant updates on the Dental Transformation Initiative.
