​​​​Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility COVID-19 Worker Retention Payments

California is stabilizing and retaining the state's health care workforce - while continuing to manage the COVID-19 pandemic - through issuing worker retention payments. These payments are the result of legislation (see section 37)​ signed on June 30, 2022 by Governor Newsom. As a result, many workers and physicians in qualifying facilities will be eligible to receive a retention payment if they:

  • Were employed at least part-time during the qualifying work period of July 30, 2022 through October 28, 2022​.
  • Are independent physicians or physicians that are part of Physician Group Entities ​(PGEs​) who provided onsite services during the same qualifying work period of July 30, 2022 through October 28, 2022.
  • Are employed by Covered Entities (CEs) or Covered Services Employers (CSEs) or who is a physician who continues to provide onsite services as of the date of record, November 28, 2022.

Registration and Application Process for CEs, CSE​s,​ PGEs, and Independent Physicians

  1. October 21, 2022 – December 23, 2022: CEs, CSEs, PGEs and Independent Physicians registration process
    The registration period has closed. Entities must have first successfully registered with DHCS to apply on behalf of eligible, direct employees. If you registered, but did not receive a link to the application, please email wrp@dhcs.ca.gov with Missing Application Link in the subject line.
  2. November 29, 2022 – January 6, 2023: CEs, CSEs, PGEs, and Independent Physicians application process
    The application period has closed. All successfully registered CEs, CSEs, PGEs, and Independent Physicians received a link to the application in the email provided at registration. If you've successfully registered with DHCS but did not submit your application by the deadline of January 6, 2023, please email wrp@dhcs.ca.gov for further submission instructions.
  3. March 2023: Payments sent to CEs, CSEs, PGEs, and Independent Physicians
    DHCS will issue payments to approved CEs, CSEs, PGEs, and Independent Physicians on March 28th, March 30th and April 5th. CEs, CSEs, PGEs, and Independent Physicians receiving funding must issue payments to approved employees within 60 days of receipt of funds.
